Metro Atlanta Regional Workforce Plan Released by Local Workforce Boards
July, 2016
As required by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), the five Local Workforce Development Boards in the 10-county metro Atlanta region (Workforce Region 3) have prepared a regional workforce plan for the City of Atlanta and the counties of Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale. The plan became available for review in July 2016.

The Federal Reserve Presents a New Ebook: 'How Can Partnerships Shape Success in Local Workforce Development?'

The ebook, Models for Workforce Development Intermediaries, is a result of the Atlanta Federal Reserve's collaboration with nation experts in workforce development and contains case studies that highlight several local and regional efforts. It is a companion to the 2015 publication, Transforming U.S. Workforce Development Policies for the 21st Century, which the Atlanta Fed developed in partnership with the Kansas City Fed and Rutgers University's John J. The Federal Reserve Focuses on Economic Growth in Small Cities

The Atlanta Federal Reserve is utilizing the Small City Economic Dynamism Index as an interactive and engaging resource to help study the growth and attractiveness of new investments in small cities alongside the unemployment rates, poverty levels, number of vacant buildings and economic distress which are pronounced in some small metros. Metro Atlanta Chamber & MAX Workforce Showcase: Building Your Talent Pipeline

The Metro Atlanta Chamber and Metro Atlanta eXchange for Workforce Solutions (MAX) hosted the Workforce Showcase event at the Metro Atlanta Chamber. There were 95 workforce stakeholders and employers in attendance. The event featured panel discussions on Workforce Systems and Employer Partnerships. The Workforce Systems panelist included: DOL Commissioner Mark Butler, Deputy Commissioner, Ben Hames with GA Dept. of Economic Development, Mark Lytle, Vice Chancellor for Economic Development for the University System of Georgia, and Barbara Wall, Director of CTAE. During the panel, panelist discussed the importance of the customized recruitment programs and also addressed the current skills gap present in the workforce community today as well as the program that exist to rectify the situation here in Georgia. The Federal Reserve Highlights Opportunity Occupations

The Vice Presidents of Community Affairs Officers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Cleveland, and Philadelphia recently shared a new report, Identifying Opportunity Occupations in the Nation's Largest Metropolitan Economies. While there are many factors influencing the scale and scope of good jobs, especially within specific locations, the goal of this report is to highlight the availability of "good jobs" across the country. The State of the South: Building Economic Opportunity in Metro Atlanta
September 8, 2015
On Tuesday, September 8, 2015, the Atlanta Regional Commission in partnership with The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and the Annie E. Casey Foundation presented the State of the South Event for a conversation around opportunity and economic mobility at the Atlanta Metropolitan State College Conference Center. One highlight of the event was the review of the 2014 Edition of the State of the South report, published by Durham, NC-based MDC, which painted a clear portrait of the southeastern US and spelled out the critical recommendations for economic and social advancement. David Dobson's presentation on Building Infrastructure for Economic Opportunity provided an overview of the State of the South with great emphasis on the metro Atlanta area.

Spotlight on Regional Workforce Networks

Regional workforce development providers have become vital players in the workforce development field, providing coordination in an often localized and fractured system. In June, Southeastern workforce collaborates met virtually to share their experiences and discuss obstacles in the field. Topics included funding, dedicated program leadership, network quality control, metrics for success, and others. While many regions face unique, location-specific challenges in workforce development coordination, some challenges are more common across efforts. GA Department of Economic Development’s Survey
July 17, 2015
As a continuation of the HDCI meeting conversations, the Georgia Department of Economic Development's Workforce division is collecting information from Georgia employers through a survey regarding: the specific occupations anticipated to demand the largest number of new employees, the occupations that are the most difficult to fill, the critical soft/workplace skills most needed, as well as additional details regarding the nature of their workforce challenges. Building a Strong Economy through Veteran Education & Employment

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary, Robert McDonald, announced on May 18, 2015, that VA has a new place-based strategy called the Veterans Economic Communities Initiative (VECI). The purpose of the VECI is to increase the number of education and employment opportunities for Veterans and their families through a network of support at the community level. Jean Thomson, Atlanta VECI Economic Liaison, announced at the May 20, 2015, MAX Steering Committee meeting that Atlanta has been selected as one of the Nation’s first VECI communities.
